Cave Leyvraz & Stevens
Geneva is the third largest wine-producing canton in Switzerland, with a vineyard covering 1480 hectares. It benefits from a temperate climate because of its proximity to Lake Geneva, its encircling mountains and a great deal of sunshine.
Wine-production in Geneva area truly started at the beginning of the Christian era, when the Helvetes and Allobroges cultivated the first acres of grape vines. (People are proud of a two thousand years history and culture with wine!).
The Burgundian kings continued and developed cultivation into the 6th century. One king, Gondebaud, passed a law in 443 which punished the theft of grapes whith death ! The first document archived in Geneva attest to Countess Eldegarde's donation to the church of her vineyard of Peissy (our village!) in 912.
Vineyard and wine have been associated with many events and people in Geneva's history: reformer Calvin received a part of his salary in wine, Jean-Jacques Rousseau gave a description of the best way to grow wines, Lord Byron and Henri Dunand (founder of the Red Cross) have praised the delights of Geneva's vineyards.
